You Are The Sun. I Am The Moon.

created for McQueen; the maker & the muse.

choreographed by: Alexis Elyzia Henry.

Two kindred spirits; this duet explores the friendship between Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen. Created to form part of AUB Dance’s McQueen: the maker and the muse, the duet opens with a section inspired by the fashion show he curated in Isabella’s memory, followed by a section about their love & support for eachother during her lifetime & closing to a segment that is choreographed to the song that was played at her funeral. The whole piece is filled with imagery and reflections of both Isabella & Alexander’s designs, highlighting how interconnected their stories were to their work. The duet speaks to the importance of their connection & ultimately to the idea of McQueen turning the grief & love that he experienced through losing Isabella into designs and fashion creations.

Made in November & December 2022.

choreographed by: Alexis Elyzia Henry. created in collaboration with the dancers.

performed by: Rai Crabtree & Rianna Corben

As part of our second year show titled McQueen: the maker and the muse, i had the absolute honor of choreographing & directing this piece. I truly think that my favourite part of the whole production process was the creation of this duet. I had the most wonderful time working with these dancers & bringing these themes to life. I am SO PROUD of the final outcome & is still one of my favourite projects to date. I have always had a a love for creation & choreography but something in the process of making this piece just sparked something in me that i adored. All the pieces fell into place so beautifully & although we had quite a short time scale, i, alongside my dancers, poured everything we had into this project. It was a creation of love & care for our art form & the themes that we carved into the work, it was so beautiful to see dance as a carriage for ideas. I did so much research & really delved into the people and stories behind the piece, which i think allowed me to really unlock the utilisation of movement for real and raw purpose. This project gave me a new understanding for the intricacies of movement and the implicature of emotion in a piece. Despite addressing such difficult & emotional themes in the piece, the process of creating it was so fun and joyous! Rai & Rianna were both so open & creative, always happy to take on new experimentations as i encouraged them to find different nuances in the movement. It felt like such a safe environment to create & to give things a go, even if it didn’t go in the final piece. We had such a wonderful time in the rehearsals & i think that love & care shone through in the final product. A big thank you to Rianna & Rai for being such wonderful collaborators to work with.
