A Conversation with Time | Launchpad 2024

devised & produced by Claire Benson.

choreographed & performed by AUB Dance’s third year cohort.

Inspired by the work of the Scottish artist Katie Paterson and her work recording the sound of melting glaciers, A Conversation with Time is a short opening work choreographed by visiting tutor and South West based Dance Artist, Claire Benson. The piece was made in creative collaboration with the third year students. In 2007, Katie Paterson spent a year working with scientists to create the Vatnajokull (the sound of), a durational project with a live phone line, accessible anywhere in the world, allowing people to dial into a submerged microphone by a melting glacier. Inspired by life in a warming world, this choreography was based on the sounds recorded, alongside the dancers' responses to creative tasks.

Performed in January 2024.

Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes ⋆

Creating this piece was a real rollercoaster of an experience - being that most of our rehearsals were late in the day and all of us were always very exhausted from the intensity of our third year schedule, but i loved exploring something completely different to what we were curating in our individual launchpad groups. Within this piece, I also got to work closely with many people in our group that i hadn’t really partnered with before and it was really fun to explore new dynamics in what we create.

Performing this piece, the behind the scenes moments and photos from the show are some of my most treasured, as it was our last time dancing as a full company together as a cohort. i adore getting ready together backstage and waiting in the wings to go on and perform; holding hands, warming up, doing our own little rituals with each other to get in the zone and calm nerves. These little moments are all part of what draws us closer together in order to give a more connecting and evocative performance.
